Upon first impression, someone may believe Sora to be a naive and happy-go-lucky kid who is easy to dismiss. He is certainly some of those things but he is also a determined optimist with a fierce loyalty towards his friends and loved ones. He’s willing to help complete strangers, which he does time and again throughout his journey, in the belief that at the end of the day it’s better to make a new friend than an enemy. His friendship with Donald and Goofy is a good example of this. Even though he had just lost his home and his two best friends, he still decided to help them look for their missing king though he was under no obligation to do so. He simply wanted to help them out and they in turn did the same for him. This sprite of kindness and goodwill is a repeated pattern in Sora’s life, going much further back than even he remembered to when he was a small child that offered to help Ventus, but that is a topic to be addressed later. His unwavering loyalty to the people he cares about has left those who would doubt him in disbelief as Ansem would be able to attest to. Sora’s sheer faith in Riku was so strong it actually helped the other boy shake off his possessor’s hold upon him and pull himself back into the light to fight beside Sora even though he had spent a majority of his time undermining, criticizing and attacking the younger boy out of fear and jealousy. At times it left Sora feeling a little sad and with some self-doubt but he never wavered in his belief that Riku wasn’t acting normally and that the other was still his friend deep inside.

Sora is a protector by nature and as such his drive is almost always the safety and happiness of others, especially his friends. What started as a quest to save Kairi and Riku, turned into a hunt to find his best friend and remember those he’d forgotten, then finally a mission to save every world from being dragged into darkness while searching for fallen allies to reunite with old friends. Along each journey, Sora shows that he’s willing to sacrifice pieces of himself to help those he holds dear. From sacrificing his own heart to free Kairi’s to willingly offering his own memories to chase down Riku, and facing overwhelming odds in single combat to aid the Hollow Bastion Committee protect their town to descending into the darkness to save Aqua despite the danger while he lacked the necessary power to properly do so, even giving up his own existence to bring his cherished friend back from the dead (Kairi can not catch a break), there is very little that Sora wouldn’t do to save the important people in his life.

To return to a previously touched upon topic, putting others before himself is just how Sora is. Even as a child he offered to keep Ventus’ heart safe inside his own even though he was far too young to realize the consequences of his actions and what they would do to him. It’s very possible that his boundless optimism was being amplified by the presence of the missing guardian of light throughout the ten years that Ventus remained hiding inside the younger Sora. Bolstering his cheerfulness and sunshiny disposition further than it might have been naturally. It’s quite possible even that Roxas is a more accurate reflect of what Sora may have been like had there not been a second heart inside of his for most of his life and with that additional heart now gone from him, as well as the presence of his Others (yes, there was two of them), Sora’s self-confidence have become shaken as he can feel the absence of those presences in his own heart which he had, for such a long time, thought to be merely his own and who he was.

He’s still a far more optimistic and cheerful teenager than most though but at least one person has noted that subtle change and it should be no surprise that that person was his oldest friend Riku. He first pointed out that it was unlike Sora to mope about a situation being outside of their control and later on witnessed the younger boy lose complete faith in himself as their friends and allies were torn away from them by hosts of Heartless (which was by no means the first time) causing Sora to collapse in defeat in the midst of battle as he declared himself to be completely useless without them. Had the other not been there to remind Sora of his own time-worn words of all being connected through their hearts, that battle could have been the last one that he had ever faced. Instead, he picked himself back up and continued to the fight, determined once more to find and save his friends and in doing so was able to help free Terra from Xehanort’s control, strengthening their numbers against the larger battle that awaited them. But that little hole of doubt in what used to be his unbreakable armor of certainty is still there to leave him up at night when he’s alone wondering who he is and what he’s supposed to do if he was ever truly his own.

Sora’s still growing up though and making mistakes is a part of that. He’s displayed a stubborn streak and can get competitive over silly things. He can also be overconfident in his own abilities at times which has led him to take reckless actions as well. Growing up Sora and Riku were always competing with each other. Who was fastest, who could swim farther, who was better at play-fighting (wooden swords were always the weapon of choice). When it came to taking their Mark of Mastery exam, Sora was certain he was going to be able to pass it with ease but instead he became trapped inside his own dreams and had to be rescued by Riku. It was a humbling experience for him but he was still happy to celebrate the other graduating to the rank of Keyblade Master.

Another example of his youthful folly though happened while running a foul with Luxord on the hunt for Davy Jones’ chest. The trio are forced to look for another sailing ship after being separated from the Black Pearl and her crew but Sora treats it more like a game much to the annoyance of Donald. While passing through an underwater passage, they come across an area that is clearly suspicious. His companions state as much but Sora immediately swims towards the curiously placed chest stating that “No pirate worth his salt ignores treasure”, ignoring their concerns in favor of living out his childhood dreams of being a pirate and leads them into a completely avoidable fight against a giant Heartless fish. His stubbornness was also what allowed Organization XIII to temporarily capture them as Sora fell victim to their baiting and ascended higher into Castle Oblivion in his frustration even though he was aware that something was affecting him and his friends as they did so. He even snaps angrily at Donald and Goofy when they express a desire to stop to figure out what’s happening to all of them at the time instead of taking a few moments to calm himself and listen to their worries.

He has allowed the viewpoint of others to affect his own at times as well, which he would later on realize were not unbiased and grow out of thanks to his own personal experiences. Sora starts off vehemently disliking all Nobodies, claiming that they were incapable of feelings and not real people as that’s what he had been repeatedly told by those he thought knew best about the subject but as he continues to encounter them, learning more about Roxas and Naminé and witnesses first hand how much Axel cared about his missing best friend, Sora comes to regret some of his choices and takes up advocating that a solution be found to help bring the Nobodies back together with their hearts or find them replacement bodies for the ones that they’d lost. He now happily counts several former members of Organization XIII as his friends and allies as well as fellow Keyblade Wielders once he gave them a chance to show him that they were just as capable of forming the same kind of emotional bonds and friendships as he was and considers Roxas to be more than simple another part of himself but his own person who deserves to have his own life separate from Sora’s and though the two may still be learning what that may mean and how to go about coexisting as individuals, Sora is happy by this change and wants to see his Other flourish and regain the life he once had.

In conclusion, Sora is a happy and well intentioned teenager who is prone to the same growing pains that any typical teenager is but with the added weight of some extra responsibilities which he wouldn’t trade for anything as those reckless mistakes, life lessons and painful hardships have helped him grow into a steadfast friend and hardy adventurer who is always ready to share a laugh, lend a hand and stand up for those that can’t even when he feels the weight of melancholy upon him. He might miss his friends, sometimes dearly so, but he trusts that they will one day be reunited again as long as they keep their hearts strong and remember each other fondly because as Sora himself has said, “Hearts are connected wherever you are.”
